My interesting facts:

My interesting facts:

Why Is It Dangerous to Hold Your Breath While Scuba Diving?
When you attempt scuba diving for the first ever time the one cardinal rule that is drummed into you is ‘never, ever hold your breath!’ Whether you are scuba diving for the first time and just want to know the basics or whether you are a seasoned diver. This will help to explain the importance of breathing continually whilst under the water
In order to explain the importance of continually breathing under water we need to look into the physics. Pressure is everything in scuba diving and as you may know the deeper you descend the more the pressure increases. If you think of your lungs for instance, when you take a deep breath above water and then descend five metres, the pressure on your lungs increases and so the volume of your lungs decreases. Even though you haven’t breathed out any of the air you took in on the surface.

So Why is Holding Your Breath So Dangerous?
Looking back to the science described above, we can see as we descend the pressure on our lungs increases and our lung volume decreases. So when we do the opposite and ascend the higher we ascend on one breath of air the more the pressure decreases and the more our lungs expand.
This can lead to two major problems
The first is an air embolism which basically means the extra air from the expanded lungs gets released into the blood stream. Bubbles in the blood are incredibly dangerous and can lead to a number of problems, most of which will either lead to a long stay in a hyperbaric chamber or death. The second problem that could happen (and this is even rarer) is for your lungs to tear.

Reports

Hi Mom and Dad!
This is my interim report for the Human Kinetics Coop.

So far, the highlights for me have been: Doing field trips with the class and hopefully having a class pet. I also enjoy doing all of our classes except english.

I am the most proud of: keeping up with my blog, and attending/enjoying class

The most interesting things I have learned about are: how the human heart works and how blood flows through the body. I enjoy learning about physical activity and the benefits of it.

An example of when I really pushed myself in SuperFit is: when i Did the hill run I wanted to stop but i pushed my self to keep going.

I could make improvements in: continuing to post my blogs, studying more.

I am really looking forward to: more field trips!

The Basics - WORK HABITS:

Attendance (classes missed and why) - I had to go grad dress shopping

Participation in field trips (woo kim, grouse grind, rock climbing) - Was grad dress shopping the day of wee kim, really aick for the grouse grind and rock climbing i attended and had a lot of fun.

Lates (how many & reasons) - sometimes im changing.

Preparedness for class (gym strip &/or supplies) -so far always if no gym strip i still particitpate

Class time management (are you using your class time to complete your work?  engaged in class discussion? participating? following along? doing your best? or talking too much? ) -yes, I pay attentiopn because what we learn about interests me.

Blog assignment completion - (out of 8 assignments) Comments? 6 or 7 i will post the ones im missing.

Self evaluation of work habits for each class in coop - G/S/N - G

Weight room October 7th

Bike Spin : 20 mins,

40 pound squats : 3 sets/ 12 reps

Lat Pull Down : 60 pounds
                         - 3 sets/ 10 reps

Seated Cable Row : 60 pounds
                              - 3 sets/ 10 reps

Seated Leg Press : 110 pounds
                            - 3 Sets/ 12 reps

My Vo2 Max

Based on my previous beep test, my Vo2 is 46.2 ml/kg/min by getting at 9.0 on it and scoring above average. For me that wasn't my best beep test so I know my VO2 max can improve.

Heart Dissection

Observation on External Anatomy:
My observations on the heart external anatomy are that the size of the heart was very similar to what  I expected it to be and the shape was obviously not shaped as a heart but round at the top and pointy at the bottom. The color of the heart was pinkish-purple and was much darker and red inside then the outside. Also, the weight was actually decently heavy due to all the muscle, It felt very squishy and cold because it was frozen The atria and pulmonary trunk were on top of the heart and the aorta is the large hole and pulmonary trunk is like an open flap next to the aorta kind of underneath it.

Internal Anatomy:
My observations on the hearts internal anatomy are that the left wall is a lot more bigger than the right wall it has a lot more muscle and works harder than the right side it also has the atria and ventricle. The chordae tendinae and the AV valves looked similar on both side, however the chordae tendinae felt like hard strings that would not stretch and AV valves were pink, soft and mushy. Some other observations that I made were that the internal part of the heart is a darker- red color and much harder.

Questions:
 1. The most surprising thing about the dissection would be to see what the heart looks like and be able to have a hands on experience, and the left side of the heart was so much thicker than right because of all the muscles.
2. The atria and ventricles are different sizes because the atria only has one job to collect and squeeze blood into the ventricles. Then the ventricles are larger because they need to contract the blood.
3. The left ventricle is more muscular than the right ventricle because the left ventricle pumps blood to the entire body and right only does to the lungs.
4. The left AV Valves (mitral) function is to close when the left ventricle contracts to prevent back flow of the blood from the left atrium and right AV Valve function is to close when the right ventricle contracts. Then the blood from the ventricles are able to go out of the heart into the blood vessels during contraction. Mitral and tricuspid valves open when the ventricles relax, to let blood to enter the ventricles from the atria.

Heart Anatomy Structures

Heart Anatomy Structures

STRUCTURE
FUNCTION
DEOXY/OXY BLOOD
LEFT ATRIUM
Receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins and pumos in to the left ventricle.
Oxy
LEFT VENTRICLE
Pumps oxygenated blood through the aortic valve into the aortic arch and to all the tissues in the body.
Oxy
RIGHT ATRIUM
Blood enters through the surperior and inferior vena cava and pumps into the pulmonary veins and around the lungs.
Deoxy
RIGHT VENTRICLE
Passes blood through the pulmonary valve and through the pulmonary artery and to the lungs.
Deoxy
PULMONARY ARTERY
Carries blood from the heart to the lungs.
Deoxy
AORTA
The aorta is the largest artery in the body.Begins at the top of the left ventricle, the heart's muscular pumping chamber. Heart pumps blood from the left ventricle into the aorta through the aortic valve. Three leaflets on the aortic valve open and close with each heartbeat to allow one-way flow of blood.
Oxy
PULMONARY VEINS
blood vessels that carry blood to the heart. Pulmonary Veins are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.
Oxy
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
one of the two main veins bringing de-oxygenated blood from the body to the heart. Veins from the head and upper body feed into the Superior Vena Cava, which empties into the right atrium of the heart.
Deoxy
INFERIOR VENA CAVA
also known as the posterior Vena Cava, is the large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body into the right atrium of the heart.
Deoxy
ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (Mitral & Tricuspid)
on the right dorsal side of the mammalian heart, between the right atrium and the right ventricle. The function of the valve is to prevent back flow of blood into the right atrium.

CHORDAE TENDINAE
/ heart strings, are cord-like tendons that connect the papillary muscles to the tricuspid valve and the mitral valve in the heart.

SEMI LUNAR VALVES (Pulmonary & Aortic)
Seperate the ventricles from major arteries.
Aortic: It prevents blood flowing back into the heart from the arteries.
Pulmonary: p
revents backflow of blood from the pulmonary trunk (artery) into the right ventricle

SEPTUM
  • The main function of the septum in heart is that it acts as barrier in between the two ventricles of the heart.
  • It divides the heart in such a manner that it divides right and left ventricles the septum.
  • It does not allow the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
