Heart Anatomy Structures

STRUCTURE
FUNCTION
DEOXY/OXY BLOOD
LEFT ATRIUM
Receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins and pumos in to the left ventricle.
Oxy
LEFT VENTRICLE
Pumps oxygenated blood through the aortic valve into the aortic arch and to all the tissues in the body.
Oxy
RIGHT ATRIUM
Blood enters through the surperior and inferior vena cava and pumps into the pulmonary veins and around the lungs.
Deoxy
RIGHT VENTRICLE
Passes blood through the pulmonary valve and through the pulmonary artery and to the lungs.
Deoxy
PULMONARY ARTERY
Carries blood from the heart to the lungs.
Deoxy
AORTA
The aorta is the largest artery in the body.Begins at the top of the left ventricle, the heart's muscular pumping chamber. Heart pumps blood from the left ventricle into the aorta through the aortic valve. Three leaflets on the aortic valve open and close with each heartbeat to allow one-way flow of blood.
Oxy
PULMONARY VEINS
blood vessels that carry blood to the heart. Pulmonary Veins are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.
Oxy
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
one of the two main veins bringing de-oxygenated blood from the body to the heart. Veins from the head and upper body feed into the Superior Vena Cava, which empties into the right atrium of the heart.
Deoxy
INFERIOR VENA CAVA
also known as the posterior Vena Cava, is the large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body into the right atrium of the heart.
Deoxy
ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (Mitral & Tricuspid)
on the right dorsal side of the mammalian heart, between the right atrium and the right ventricle. The function of the valve is to prevent back flow of blood into the right atrium.

CHORDAE TENDINAE
/ heart strings, are cord-like tendons that connect the papillary muscles to the tricuspid valve and the mitral valve in the heart.

SEMI LUNAR VALVES (Pulmonary & Aortic)
Seperate the ventricles from major arteries.
Aortic: It prevents blood flowing back into the heart from the arteries.
Pulmonary: p
revents backflow of blood from the pulmonary trunk (artery) into the right ventricle

SEPTUM
  • The main function of the septum in heart is that it acts as barrier in between the two ventricles of the heart.
  • It divides the heart in such a manner that it divides right and left ventricles the septum.
  • It does not allow the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

This year I chose to take co-op. I chose to take co-op because I was interested in Kinetic science and thought that the super fit everyday would be an advantage in using that time to get more fit.

Outside of school I played soccer and regularly play other sports for fun.
Over the summer I wasn't as active as I wish I was and I want to spend this year using every opportunity to stay in shape and improve on my fitness.

My fitness goals for this semester is to push my self to be better and ultimately become for fit.

Overall i'm looking forward to this semester and doing all the activities we have planned to do.
